What is an Enrolled Agent?
An Enrolled Agent is a federally licensed tax practitioner who has unlimited rights, like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPAs), to represent tax professionals before the IRS for any issues relating to collections, audits and tax appeals. They are allowed to advise, represent, and prepare tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, estates, trusts, and anything else that is required to be reported to the IRS.

These tax specialists have earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the IRS by either passing a three-part examination covering individual tax returns; business tax returns; and representation, practice and procedure or through relevant experience as a former IRS employee. All candidates are subjected to a rigorous background check conducted by the IRS.
Enrolled agents are the only tax professionals who do not require a state license. However, they have a federal license and can represent a taxpayer in any state. They must abide by the specifications of the Treasury Department's Circular 230, which provides the guidelines governing enrolled agents.

While an Enrolled Agent (EA) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) are skilled and authorized tax professionals, an Enrolled Agent is specifically focused on taxation, whereas a CPA can specialize in taxation and other financial and accounting matters.
